Family Fun

Spending time with your family is certainly one of the most enjoyable highlights that life has to offer. Certainly, some amount of time is involved, and money too. But we're not talking about huge chunks of both elements - but just a moderate measure that lets your family enjoy a great time without exhausting your family fortune or annual leave.

Most people's idea of family fun involves spending two weeks at Disney Land, or some other vacation resort. Vacation getaways are - no doubt - fun - but they may very well drain your budget as well. Family fun doesn't mean you've to join a travel group, deplete your savings, or even get out of your home. As a homeowner, you're probably aware of the various ways to make merry within your cosy abode.

Here're some simple ideas to try with your family. In fact, why don't you add your own ideas to the list too? With all these, you'll never run out of things to do!

  • Attend a musical or dance.
  • Take a bike ride in the grounds of your estate.
  • Hold a family BBQ party or picnic in your home.
Did your picnic get rained out? Don't despair. Have an indoor picnic, complete with blankets, paper plates, cups, etc - and have a blasting good time!
  • Fly a kite.
Try gathering all your folks and have a picnic in the park. After the scrumptious food, fly a kite together – a very inexpensive, but fun family outing.
  • Play catch or Frisbee in the playground of your estate.
  • Visit any of the museums in Singapore, such as the Singapore Art Museum or Asian Civilisations Museum, or the local museum in your town.
  • Visit the zoo, and the ever-popular Night Safari.
  • Go to the airport.
  • Walk the mall.
  • Plant some flora and fauna in your planter's box.
Gardening is a fun, healthy, and educational activity for you and your family.

  • Play board games or card games in your living room. Or for more fun, try making up your own games.

  • Have a scavenger hunt within your home.
A variation of the scavenger hunt is the nature hike. This involves searching for as many different varieties of a specific item, such as leaves, flowers, rocks, birds, etc, in the grounds of your estate, or a favourite park. You can consider looking for several items on one walk, or simply one specific item only.

  • Visit the library.
Many of the local branches have activities planned for the children, such as story time, craft activities, movies, and more.
  • Read a book together as a family.
  • Take a blanket and several books into the "wild" - so to speak - and read under the shade of a tree.
  • Work on a word puzzle together.
Create your own family word puzzles or word searches, and have a laughing-good-time solving!
  • Watch a family video and discuss it together afterwards.
  • Wash the car together.
This can be great fun on a hot day!

  • Camp out in your balcony.
  • Clean out your storeroom.
  • Dig out those old family albums and have a superb "chuckly" fun time.
  • Make a family journal of your fun times together.
  • Make homemade Christmas decorations.
  • At Christmas, make or buy a few extra gifts for someone in need.
